In your home, you’d quickly notice that there was a problem with your electricity if your water didn’t run or if your A/C unit went out in the middle of July. There are dozens of systems working in your home that you have to be aware of. There’s also one that likely runs smoothly without you ever paying much attention to it. When was the last time you checked your sump pump? If you haven’t even considered it in ages, you aren’t alone. Some people aren’t even aware they have one.
So, what are sump pumps? A sump pump works to ensure that groundwater doesn’t accumulate to flood your crawlspace or damage your foundation. If you have one, you’ll usually find it in your crawl space. For the most part, sump pumps run smoothly. When they don’t Milestone is there to help. We’ve got a team of professional Plumbers who are capable of repairing broken sump pumps or taking care of a new sump pump installation for you.

Do You Need a Sump Pump?
Maybe you don’t have a sump pump and are wondering if you should be concerned. The truth is that not every household needs one. Just know that if any of the following signs are true, then you should probably talk to us about sump pump installations:
- You’ve experienced flooding in your crawl space before.
- You live in a valley or flatland with soil that accumulates water.
- Your area gets a significant amount of rain and snow annually.
- You’re storing items that are valuable in your crawlspace.
If any of these describes your home, you may be a good candidate for our sump pump installations at Milestone.
How do Sump Pumps Work?
A sump pump is installed at the lowest point in your home in a ‘sump pit’. When too much groundwater accumulates, it collects in that sump pit. The pressure from that water activates a sensor which causes the pump to kick on. If there is no sensor. a float arm rises with the water. When it gets to a certain level, the pump kicks on. The pump then routes water from the sump pit out into a drain pipe or storm sewer where it is carried away from your home. Your sump pump will also work when a sudden flood occurs. For example, if a pipe bursts, water can drain into the pit, to be pumped away. However, this process only works if the sump pump is in good condition. That’s where we come in.

Troubleshooting Your Sump Pump
When something goes wrong with your sump pump, you can check on a few things before you call in the Milestone team. First, check the plug and fuse. Make sure those are both okay. If that isn’t the issue, take a look at the sump pit. Has anything fallen into it? This can happen if the pit doesn’t have a cover. We’ll be happy to fit your sump pump with a cover to prevent that from happening. If none of this solves the problem, there is an issue with your sump pump and this should only be handled by a professional Plumber or electrician at Milestone.
