“We’re all just hoping our AC keeps running through this Texas heat,” said CBS reporter Robbie Owens, “but there are a few simple things you can do to make sure it doesn’t break down under the stress.”
Most indoor AC systems, especially those in closets, have a filter located near the bottom. Experts agree that regular maintenance is the key to keeping your home cool during extreme summer temperatures.
“Keeping the filter clean will make your system run about 20% more efficiently,” explained a Milestone technician. “Once the filter clogs, the system can’t pull in enough air. That makes it work harder—when it’s already working hard enough—and it can wear out fast.”
Homeowner Michael Tice learned the importance of preventative maintenance the hard way. Now, he has a service contract for his Venus, Texas home.
“They come out, inspect both systems inside and out, replace filters, change anything that needs to be changed, and flush the drains,” Tice said. “It’s peace of mind, especially in the middle of a Texas summer.”
Even with clean filters and drains, experts say don’t forget your outdoor unit.
“One of the best things you can do is take a garden hose, cover the end with your thumb, and gently rinse the unit off at an angle,” said the Milestone technician. “I tell friends and family all the time—rinse your outdoor unit and change your filters as recommended, and you’ll save thousands of dollars over the life of your AC system.”
Being proactive can save you money—and a lot of discomfort.
“The last thing you want is for your AC to fail in the middle of summer—especially if your wife is nine months pregnant,” Tice joked.
Spoken like someone who’s learned the hard way: stay ahead of AC maintenance, and you’ll stay cool all summer.
