Making Sure the Breakers Don’t Break!

Every home in North Richland Hills relies on a diverse array of unique devices to keep its many essential systems running. The electrical panel, often referred to as a breaker box, is just one of them. Don’t let the small size and out-of-the-way location of this device fool you. Electrical panels are some of the most powerful and essential pieces of equipment found in modern homes.

Remember, all of the electricity that enters the home from the municipal power grid must first pass through the breaker box. When an appliance or device pulls too much power, it overloads the system and the breaker gets tripped. That’s when you should call Milestone for help.

Milestone’s team of expert electricians understand how important every part of your home’s electrical system is, including the panel. If you think there may be something amiss with your electrical panel, we can send a technician out quickly to diagnose the problem and provide repairs.

Working with the pros at Milestone means you don’t need to understand the ins and outs of every component in the home’s many systems, but it’s still smart to learn the basics. Every home has an electrical panel, and without one, there would be no way to access the power from the municipal grid.

What Is the Circuit Breaker in Your Home?

Breaker boxes are designed to ensure that power circulates properly throughout the home for dispersal to its many devices and appliances. They prevent damage and danger by providing a mechanism for stopping electricity from flowing to overloaded circuits.

The circuits regulate how much electricity is flowing to each area of the home. If one overloads, it trips a breaker and stops the power from flowing. It may be annoying having to reset breakers periodically, but that’s their job. Every home’s electrical panel will look a little different, and they’re not all located in the same places. Even two houses situated right next to each other may feature breaker boxes found in different locations, especially if one of them is older than the other. In new homes, it’s common for electrical panels to be placed outside or in a garage. In older homes, they’re usually found in closets or utility rooms.

Once you find the panel, keep it easily accessible. The area around it should have at least three feet of clearance so that you can get to the breaker box in an emergency. Older electrical panels weren’t designed to handle the amount of power used by modern families. More often than not, they need to be upgraded to accommodate new appliances, extra outlets, or even electric vehicle charging stations. Even if you understand how breaker boxes work, never try to upgrade it alone. Only licensed electricians should perform this vital task.

Power To Every Room

Not sure if the electrical panel needs to be upgraded? Give us a call to schedule an inspection. We’ll send out an expert electrician to assess the home’s electrical system and its panel’s safety and function. If your panel is in prime condition and able to handle 100% of the load placed on it during peak power usage hours, we’ll let you know. Similarly, we’ll also tell you if the panel needs work to be returned to safe operation and whether that work should be considered an emergency repair or something that can be put off until a later date. Our electricians can usually take care of repairs and upgrades on the spot. Sometimes, though, that’s not enough and the only viable solution is to replace the panel. Milestone’s electricians typically recommend breaker box replacements if:

  • The breaker box is more than 15 years old
  • There is visible corrosion on the panel or its cover
  • There are several breaker brands in use
  • There’s rust anywhere on the system

If any of these situations apply, the only safe solution is electrical panel replacement. Remember, you should never attempt a replacement at home or remove the cover of a breaker box without a licensed electrician’s supervision.
