Most surge protectors are made of metal oxide varistors. Varistors are electronic components with electrical resistance. That resistance varies depending on the voltage applied. Surge protectors can be made with one or more of these MOV’s. When a varistor receives a charge that exceeds normal energy levels, it pulls the excess energy to the ground.
Once they have suppressed a surge, they need to be replaced. There are models available that offer a longer life expectancy and can be used multiple times, but they tend to be very expensive and do not offer any insurance coverage for your electronic devices or appliances.
